My Birds ‘n’ Bots series arose from my ‘painting a day’ project blog that I indulged in in 2007. While I was on the ‘still life’ kick, I painted a tiny still life of one of my tin toy robots. And further along the way, I started painting another passion of mine: birds. They came together late one evening while I was mourning the lack of a theme, a niche that I could indulge my whimsy in an ongoing interest and still remain enchanted with it for a number of years. No easy feat, I assure you. My love of Japanese animated feature creator Hayao Miyazaki’ works, and the paintings of Eric Joyner, and of lost and abandoned places all came together that night in the single decision to explore putting my robots and birds together in natural settings. That tentative start so many years ago is still going strong, as you can see from the selection of paintings here, now divided into what I call: Fine Art (the realistic robots and settings) and Funky Fine Art (my fun loving tin toy robots).
